The Secret Garden of Marrakesh

Marrakesh is famous for its large, colourful souks and busy squares. Still, it hides many quiet green spaces in its walls, including the beautiful Le Jardin Secret. Although it’s found in the heart of the medina, this restored 19th-century palace garden remains a peaceful space. We went in to escape the summer heat and ended up relaxing in the shade all afternoon.

The Secret Garden’s History

Over the years, Le Jardin Secret has been home to many Moroccan politicians and important figures. Unfortunately, it fell into ruin in the 1930s after the owner's death. Thankfully, it has been carefully restored and reopened to the public in 2016.

The Secret Garden’s Design

The garden is divided into two areas:

  • The Islamic Garden: A traditional space that was designed to represent paradise. Its four quadrants, separated by walkways, are dotted with flowing water features, shaded seating areas, and fragrant plants. Look out for the ancient canals that once brought water to the palace and its gardens.
  • The Exotic Garden: This section is an explosion of colour, with lush greenery and exotic flowers from around the world. A surprising range of plants thrive in Marrakesh's climate.

And don't miss the private tower! A rare privilege in Marrakesh, it rises high above the garden. Climb to the top, and you'll have excellent views of the medina, and on a clear day, the Atlas Mountains.

Eating at The Secret Garden

The garden has two cafés where you can take a break from exploring and treat yourself to something delicious:

  • Café Menzeh is the perfect spot to cool down with freshly squeezed juice or a non-alcoholic cocktail. They also offer hot drinks, a selection of salads, quiches, tasty paninis, plus sweet treats like ice cream, homemade pie, and fruit salad.
  • Café Sahrij serves all the same food and drinks as Café Menzeh but with the added bonus of being licensed to sell beer. So you can enjoy a cold one with your meal.

Shopping at The Secret Garden

The garden has a lovely little shop where you can find unique souvenirs like hand-painted artwork, beautiful photographs, and authentic Moroccan handicrafts.

Art at The Secret Garden

Beyond the peaceful gardens, there's also a dedicated gallery space that displays a selection of contemporary art. When we visited, the gallery was showing a collection of paintings by Iraqi artist Taha Sabie.
