The Old Salt Box Co., Fogo

Welcome to our Shout-Out Series! Where we’ll spotlight the amazing small businesses that make our travels so special. Today, we're featuring The Old Salt Box Co., which offers unique vacation rentals in Newfoundland, Canada.

About The Old Salt Box Co.

The clue is in the name! The company has carefully renovated eight old saltbox homes, blending modern comforts with original features. Built in the 19th century by settlers arriving in Newfoundland, these wooden houses now welcome people from all over the world.

Inside the Saltbox Rentals

Aunt Glady's view

The houses have one to three bedrooms and are thoughtfully decorated – think coastal vibes with homely touches and lots of natural light. Each one has a window wall that frames unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean, and be warned, it can be hard to look away! The kitchens have everything you need to cook your favourite meals, including an oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and coffee maker. The bathrooms are fitted with a walk-in shower and a claw-foot bathtub. There’s even wifi and TVs for anyone who doesn’t want to unplug completely.

Why Do We Like Them?

Aunt Glady's front bedroom

We rented Aunt Glady's salt box when we visited Fogo, and honestly, none of us wanted to leave! In fact, I'm pretty sure we would have moved in permanently if we had the chance. It wasn't just that it ticked all our boxes – the place had real character. Little touches like the handmade quilts, comfy sofas, and the electric fireplace made it feel cosy and snug. And when we weren't enjoying the ocean view, the blinds gave us all the privacy we needed. Self-check-in and off-season rates were a bonus, making the whole experience even better. It was the perfect home away from home.

Where Are They?

Three of the homes are in the little town of Fogo on Fogo Island, where you can watch for passing whales and icebergs. Aunt Glady's and Grandma Lilly's are near the Brimstone Head hiking trails, and just a 15-minute walk from Bang Belly Bistro – a must-visit for foodies! Mary's Place, at the base of the Fogo Head Trail, is a quick 4-minute drive to the heart of town.

Another three are in the New World Island and Twillingate area. Where you can join iceberg and whale-watching tours, enjoy local dinner theatre, and shop for handmade crafts. Evelyn's Place, in Herring Neck, is about 10 minutes from Twillingate, while Daisy's Place in Merritt's Harbour is just 8 minutes away. Gertie's Place is the closest to town, just a few minutes from Main Street.

Aunt Donna's Beach House is in Musgrave Harbour and sits opposite four miles of sandy beach. Or, if island life calls to you, head to Aunt Christi's on Greenspond Island, where you can look out at the Puffin Island lighthouse. While you’re there, hike the Greenspond Walking Trail and then treat yourself to a hearty Newfoundland meal at Dykes Grub To Go.
